What To Expect at Shoshone National Forest on a Snowmobile

Winter wonderlands abound in beautiful Shoshone National Forest, and there’s no better way to experience the glories of the backcountry than by snowmobile. Whether you’re sightseeing with your family, as a couple or with friends – or just getting in some you time – you won’t be sorry you hopped on the back of a snowmobile for a day’s adventure.

But what should you expect during your tour? Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know.

Snowmobiling Is Cold, So Bundle Up!

There’s always danger in heading into the untamed reaches of parks and forests during winter. If you’re going with a tour guide, you’re all set, because they will provide you with the gear you need – boots, jackets, pants, goggles and so forth. However, if you’re going alone, speak to a knowledgeable outdoor gear expert before embarking. It could literally save your life.

Always Bring Extra Food and Water

You don’t want to get caught in the backcountry hungry and thirsty. Most people don’t know that cold, dry weather can suck as much moisture out of you as a desert, so make sure to bring extra water. And NEVER eat snow, which can lower your body temperature dangerously. Bring more than enough to eat as well, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

Plan for Those Kodak Moments

The wonderful thing about getting off the beaten path is how many opportunities you have to catch Nature in the act. Winter is a great time to catch sight of birds, deer, elk, caribou, and small mammals. You may even see a bear or a wolf, so be prepared for those wildlife encounters and photo opportunities!

Check Permits

Many parks and forests limit the permits for snowmobiling and other activities. Shoshone does have permitting rules, as do Yellowstone and other surrounding conservation areas. This is a good reason to go with a guide, who can take care of the permits for you.
