Can You Reach Old Faithful in Winter? Yes!

Old Faithful has a well-deserved reputation as one of the most spectacular sights in the United States. Its clockwork-like eruptions occur every 35 to 120 minutes. While that might seem like an uncertain amount of time to wait, it’s incredibly reliable on a geological timescale and makes for a guaranteed sighting that lasts up to five minutes.

That said, most of us think of Yellowstone National Park as a warm-weather destination. Not so, friend! Actually, you can go see Old Faithful any time of year, and against the backdrop of snowy fields is one of the best times to do so. But how do you get there?

Take the Road Most Traveled

In wintertime, there’s only one way in to see Old Faithful: along the road from Gardiner, Montana and through the northern gateway. You can sometimes drive there, but often the weather makes it unfit for private cars. In that case…

Hire an Expert for a Full Day Tour

A snow coach tour is a better bet than driving yourself for several reasons, including:

You don’t have to hope the roads are open, but can rely on experts to get you there whenever possible

There’s no need to worry about driving safety, even in rough winter conditions

You can focus on dressing warmly, bringing snacks and preparing the fam for a day-long adventure

You’ll see the best sights along the way, such as other thermal pictures and historic park sights

Make Sure to Dress Warmly

Yellowstone has been known to hit lows of -66 degrees Fahrenheit in winter and is described by some as the coldest place in the continental United States (besides Alaska). Although you will spend most of your tour in the vehicle, you will be hopping out for photo opportunities along the way, so it’s important to make sure you’re properly geared up.
