Best Summer Day Hikes in Yellowstone

If you’re planning a summer vacation to Yellowstone, pack your hiking shoes! A day hike is a great activity to get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and take in the scenery. Here are a few of the best hikes in Yellowstone.

Lone Star Geyser – Beginner

The trailhead is easy to find, just 3.5 miles southeast of Old Faithful overpass. The trail is relatively flat, but the views of Firehole River are spectacular. Once you get to the geyser, cross your fingers that you’ll get to witness an eruption, which typically occurs every 3 hours.

Round trip: 4.8 miles

Yellowstone Lake Overlook – Moderate

West Thumb Geyser Basin parking area is where you’ll find the trailhead. Through the forest and mountain meadows, you’ll climb about 400 feet in elevation. At the top, look out over Yellowstone Lake. You’ll need to stay on the trail because it’s in a hydrothermal area, so don’t veer off on your own.

Round trip: 1.5 miles

Mount Washburn – Moderate

The lookout tower atop Mount Washburn provides hikers a restorative station to take in the scenery and gear up for the hike back down. The trailhead is located in the Canyon Village area on Dunraven pass.

Round trip: 6.4 miles

Purple Mountain – Advanced

Take the West entrance into Yellowstone and look for a turnout about 0.25 miles north of Madison Junction. Getting to the top is strenuous with an intense climb, but once you’re there enjoy panoramic views of the rivers below.

Round trip: 6 miles
